Ready, Steady, Munch!

Max is now almost 19 weeks old, and on the advice of our paediatrician, weaning has begun. HUGE step, and yet another sign my boy is growing up far too fast for my liking!

I wondered how Max would take to weaning. He loves his milk, and I was unsure how a different taste and texture, as well as a new method of eating, would go down. I needn’t have worried.

I hate baby rice as a first food – I think it is bland, tasteless and smells awful, and if I hate it, why should I give it to my baby? So I started with something much more delicious – a fruit puree from Cow and Gate. We chose apple, and away we went!

As you can see, Max took it all in his stride, and managed a few spoonfuls of puree – success for Weaning: Day 1!
Yes, it’s messy, and yes it’s a slow process but in the last week, Max has done an amazing job – taking more food at every sitting, and trying a couple of new flavours from the Cow and Gate fruit pouches range – the favourites seem to be apple and pear.
I chose to start weaning with the Cow and Gate pouches for a few reasons:
  • The pouches are easy, convenient and transportable, and can be resealed and stored in the fridge – perfect for the start of weaning, when you only use a small amount at a time.
  • They are made from 100% fruit – no flavourings, colourings or preservatives. Just fruity goodness.
  • They are what I call ‘proper’ purees – totally smooth, the right consistency for spoon feeding, and as close to the texture of milk as you will get.

Max has now become an expert at this weaning malarkey, and gets excited when he sees a spoon coming. Think it might just be time to get a highchair, and start in earnest. I plan to use a mixture of purees and baby-led weaning methods to allow Max to try as many flavours and textures as possible. Watch this space for updates!

Awwww my kids are almost 11 and 7 now and I remember this time so well! I had the same opinion of baby rice so gave mine weetabix with baby milk. Izzy hated it and Xavier couldn’t get enough. X

Aww we have just started weaning Rosie, she is very almost 6 months – I love weaning my babies, but Rosie is not too keen yet. I can’t wait to get cracking with all the different tastes and textures.

Bless, weaning seems like a lifetime ago now. I can remember sweet potato puree being a favourite here. I did everything myself and bulk froze it, great way of trying different combinations too! Good luck

I remember weaning, I remember being quite worried about the whole process. Max looks like he is doing an amazing job, you both do. I hope it continues to go well.
